Xylosma congestum

Shiny Xylosma

General Info

Xylosma congesta is a dense shrub valued for its shiny, bright green foliage. New growth is an attractive bronze color. It is good as a hedge or large screen, or can be trained as a tree. Flowers and fruit are rarely produced. Although native to humid forest environments, this species demonstrates an impressive tolerance for drought and heat. It is extensively planted throughout southern California, and in particular along Highway 101. However, giant whiteflies can easily infest this plant, damaging its foliage.
