Araucaria bidwillii

Bunya Bunya

General Info

Araucaria bidwillii is a massive conifer tree with a pyramidal crown. This tree has a single large trunk that is free of branches until it reaches the crown. The branches are arranged in whorls, and the leaves are triangular with parallel venation. This is a monoecious species that produces large, spiny cones weighing 10-15 lbs. When these cones fall, they can cause significant damage, so it is advised not to sit under these trees, and they are often fenced off for safety. Native to Australia, this species is cultivated in Mediterranean climates around the world. It can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and thrives in moist soils. It can also be grown as a houseplant.
